About

The bodies of works explores the new role punctuation has taken in a modern language, transformed by new technologies and digital written speech.

For centuries, punctuation markers have been used as secondary class symbols; subaltern grammatical conventions here to indicating structural relations between group of words and to disambiguate the meaning of sentences.  With the rise of digital communications and the popularization of new elements such as emoticons, punctuation is now elevated to the ranks of letters, able to generate meaning on its own independently of letters and words.

The artist appropriates the familiar codes of dictation exercises taught in primary school and, by spelling out one-by-one the string of punctuation marks used to form an emoticon, invites the viewer to rethink the relation the impact of  new technologies  on language.
